Growing vegetables around or near the house for household use is called kitchen gardening. Historically, it has been used to grow edible and medicinal plants. The plants are primarily cultivated for domestic use, with occasional seasonal surpluses being given away or sold. However, a commercial operation that grows a variety of vegetables is more commonly referred to as a market garden or a farm.
The purpose of kitchen gardening is to produce organic vegetables free of pesticides and chemicals for domestic use. Among them, 76% of respondents grew only vegetables, while 24% grew vegetables and fruits. Most kitchen gardeners (81%) strongly agreed that a kitchen garden has a valuable impact on health. With increasing industrialization and agriculture demands in urban areas of a country like Pakistan, people must start growing their own food. Moreover, land for farming is being reduced as a lot of land has turned infertile due to incorrect agricultural practices.
Thus, one way to support local farmers and the economy is to start growing food in lawns, homes, or kitchens. Kitchen gardening has broadened to include grains in addition to fruits and vegetables. However, it is primarily used for growing vegetables.
